Derventio
Unhappy is he who must live alone, to him fate has commanded that he dwell friendless. Better for him if he had a brother, both of them from one man, the heirs of an earl, if they must both go against a boar: that is a death-handed animal. The warriors must always carry gear and sleep together. Never may they be hindered by speech, before they are parted by death.

Extract from Maxims I

Cestrefeld is an 'Anglo-Danish' group, the people we portray would have lived in a society that included elements of both the Anglo-Saxon and Viking cultures, hence our members portray a range of ethnicities. Every member selects an authentic name and is encouraged to develop a character background, which can grow as you advance through the rank structure of the society.

Unlike modern English names people of the time we recreate did not have a family name or surname. Instead they may have had a nickname (such as Wulfric the Black). Anglo - Saxons often used where they were from, e.g. Siward ob Byrtun (Siward of Burton), whereas Vikings and their descendants often used their relationship to others, e.g. Aesa Brynjolfwif (Aesa Brynjolf's wife). Here you can meet some of the current group members and their characters:

Eadred of Lichfield is a Saxon. A leatherworker who's family were killed by Vikings whilst he was away buying leather from the next village (at least that's his story! He bore the signs of a woman when he returned...). Eadred travelled the lands of Mercia trading his goods where he could. Shortly there after, Eadred met and pursued a maid by the name of Mildrith who spent many months ignoring his noble intentions (those who know him doubt just how noble his intentions were) until she finally relented and wed the poor soul and issued forth an heir by the name of Offa and a daughter Bebbe . Eadred now works on providing leather goods  or repairing leather goods that have fallen into disrepair

Mildrith Eadredwif
Rank of Bondi
Anglo - Saxon
Mildrith's family were simple craftsmen supplying the cathedral at Lichfield. She met Eadred at a festival held to honour St Chad. She took so long to make up her mind about Eadred as his reputation was somewhat poor but her mother needed her to leave the family home to make room for other family members and so Midrith agreed to marry and travel with Eadred. Mildrith still holds St Chad in esteem as she feels he blessed her marriage to Eadred and as a result she travels to Lichfield once a year to pay respect to St Chad and to celebrate at the festival. MIldrith works to keep the family running whilst Eadred works to bring what money he can to the family so with trade goods and the use of a good barter she and her family are well cared for.
